INTERVIEW:
To begin with, let’s review your recent work. What is the inspiration behind “Things About To Change”?
“Things About To Change” was inspired by a moment of realization; that hip-hop, like the world, is at a crossroads. The title is both a warning and a promise. Lyrically, it draws from the energy of KRS-ONE’s The Mixtape, which I was listening to on a long road trip. It reminded me that the culture is rooted in truth-telling. This song is my way of stepping into that tradition; loud, raw, and unapologetically aware.
This is quite a huge project for you, what does it mean to you as an individual?
This project, “40”, is the most personal body of work I’ve ever made. It marks a milestone in my life, not just turning 40, but turning a corner spiritually, mentally, and creatively. It’s my journal, my therapy, my prayer, and my protest all in one.
Could you describe how this release is different from your previous work and where this one belongs in the sequence of your career?
Previous projects reflected stages in my growth, but “40” is my foundation. This album doesn’t just document who I am, it defines what I stand for. Musically, it blends elements of rap-rock, reggae, boom bap, and soul. Lyrically, it’s more focused and self-aware. This project isn’t chasing trends, it’s chasing truth.
What do you wish people to get from “Things About To Change”?
I hope it reminds people that hip-hop is a voice for the voiceless. That it’s still possible to make something honest and bold without losing your integrity. And most of all, I want people to hear it and feel seen, like someone out there gets what they’re going through.
Is there a particular song other than this one, you are keen on that seems to communicate your message best and why?
Definitely “GREED”. That track speaks on the systems we live under; political, cultural, economic, and how they prey on people’s pain. It’s both a callout and a mirror. If “Things About To Change” is the announcement, “GREED” is the reason why change is necessary.
What are some of the difficulties you encountered and some of the highlights in “Things About To Change” making process?
One challenge was recording and producing with collaborators remotely. Fruit Vendor and Dream Life, two brilliant artists, helped bring the record to life, but we never shared a studio. Highlights? And when I done with the final mix (Yes, I mixed the album along with my good friend MixedbyKap.I knew then this wasn’t just a song, it was a moment.
How do you see this project fitting in with the present stage of your life both as an individual and an artist?
It fits like a mirror. “40” came from a place of reflection. I had to disconnect from the noise, look at my life, and reconnect with who I am. It’s my reminder that growth doesn’t stop, it deepens.
Since you released “Things About To Change”, what has the reaction of the fans been?
The love has been real. From social media to in-person conversations, fans have told me this feels like hip-hop they needed. I’ve had people say it gave them goosebumps, not because of the beat alone, but because of the truth behind it.
How can your fans reach you and your music whether through the internet or in person?
You can find me everywhere @Itsbabyt, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and more. My music’s available on all streaming platforms, and my website www.itsbabyt.com has all the latest updates, videos, and tour info.
Where does this release sit in the thick of those works in loads and loads of other work?
This is the centerpiece. “40” is the album everything before it was building toward. It’s not just another release, it’s a statement. From the artwork to the lyrics, everything is intentional.
What’s next for you after this release? Are there any new projects or surprises that are coming soon?
Right now, I’m focused on visuals. The “Things About To Change” music video is in production, and we’re also working on videos for “GREED” and “BLESS UP”. Beyond that, I’m writing again. The next chapter’s already on the way.
