Plasma Chasms is the brainchild of two talented musicians, Jane Drewett from Australia and Adrian Guerrero from the United States. This eclectic duo came together in Los Angeles in 2020, drawn by a shared passion for psychedelic rock and indie music. From the beginning, their collaboration has been a seamless fusion of their diverse influences—Jane bringing the indie-Australian vibe, while Adrian infuses it with a strong So-Cal spirit. Their combined sound has been defined as a psychedelic excursion through classic indie-pop with a gritty, rhythmic garage rock twist. It is both vintage and refreshingly current.
After releasing their self-titled first EP in 2022, the group rose to fame thanks to their unique combination of spacey, neo-vintage tones and complex musical arrangements. A significant turning point in their career was brought about by the EP’s success: an invitation to take part in the International Pop Overthrow Festival in Los Angeles. Jane and Adrian have been working hard to produce their first full-length album, “Chrysalis”, ever since. Layers of psychedelic pop, melodic guitars, and dreamy synths explore the immense expanse of the human condition in this album, which carries on the cosmic adventure begun with their EP.
The last song from Plasma Chasms‘ much awaited debut album “Chrysalis,” “Already Waiting,” was released on August 14th, 2024. With its mesmerizing atmosphere created by hypnotic synths and luscious vocals, this music transports listeners to a contemporary psychedelic synth-pop universe. With its sad query, “What if the love you thought was never reciprocated actually was?” the song explores issues of unrequited love and miscommunication. “Already Waiting” explores the vulnerability and fear of expressing oneself that frequently accompany love in a hauntingly beautiful way. As the final teaser before “Chrysalis” is fully unveiled, this single promises to leave listeners spellbound, offering a taste of the ethereal and introspective journey that awaits.
I knew I was going to go on a unique musical adventure the moment I hit play on Plasma Chasms’ “Already Waiting.” A mesmerizing synth opens the song, engulfing my senses and providing a warm, fuzzy blanket. A beautiful, ethereal atmosphere that feels both alien and incredibly familiar is what follows, and it all starts with a soothing rhythm. I can’t resist losing myself in the sound, as the soft caress of the percussion rhythms melds perfectly with the delicate synths to create a warm, depressing environment that speaks to my innermost soul.
When the vocals finally start at 0:14, I’m really impressed with how deep and clear they are. Although there is a calming tone to the voice, there is also a hint of fragility that relates directly to the concept of unrequited love. As I listen, I’m aware of the weight of what is left unsaid, the hesitancy, and the fear of saying something so strong it could end the world. I’m torn between the poignancy of the message and the beauty of the sound because of the grace with which the lyrics are delivered. The song feels incredibly intimate because of this uncommon combination, as like it’s speaking directly to my own experiences with love and vulnerability.
The song has further depth at the 0:25 mark when the melodic basslines are introduced. As the bass adds a richness to the soundscape that wasn’t previously present, the moment nearly feels like a revelation. The heavenly guitar chords and the basslines combine to produce an indie pop spell that is utterly captivating. The soft progression of the music has me nodding along to the beat and totally engrossed. The song evokes a sense of desire and a bittersweet aspect that sums up the complexity of love, including both its beauty and its suffering.
I’m drawn in by the song’s subtle rhythmic and movement changes as it goes along. The sound of the song varies over time; these are hardly noticeable at first, but each improvement makes the whole experience better. It reminds me of watching the sunrise, as the light gradually reveals new details in the landscape with each passing second. What’s so amazing about “Already Waiting” is how consistently it is delivered in spite of these adjustments. I’m interested in this dynamic sound throughout since it maintains consistency without ever becoming overly forceful.
The vocals, too, evolve as the song moves forward. At one point, the voice is double-tracked, which produces a warmer, richer sound that gives me a comforting hug. Particularly captivating is the harmonizing at 1:24, which gives the song a heavenly, almost otherworldly quality. I become aware of how much time and effort has gone into writing this song during these occasions. The vocal melodies are not only exquisite, but also incredibly expressive, expressing feelings that are impossible for words to adequately describe.
I feel as like I’ve traveled through fear, love, and the delicate balancing act between the two by the time the song ends. “Already Waiting” is an experience that lasts long after the final note fades, not merely a song. The sound’s airy happiness and mournful undertones mix to provide an eerie yet uplifted atmosphere. It’s the kind of song that I could listen to repeatedly and learn something new or find a deeper meaning each time.
One of the best pieces of indie pop ever is Plasma Chasms’ “Already Waiting.” This song perfectly embodies the spirit of musical innovation, fusing emotional lyrics with opulent instruments to produce something really unique. For all those who value the beauty of surreal, dreamy soundscapes, this song is a must-listen. It is a kind reminder that beauty can be discovered even in silent, hesitant moments and that often the most powerful expressions of love are the ones that are kept to yourself.
