“News Release” “Black and White” by CHARLES HS reflect on societal issues and personal feelings of isolation. “Despite a somber tone, the song has an underlying sense of warmth, encouraging listeners to escape reality and adopt a different point of view.”

The first project of independent Kent-based Indie-pop artist CHARLES HS‘s 2023 campaign, “Moonlight / Black and White,” was made available on January 6. Charles has chosen to start the year with a more somber, philosophical sound in anticipation of a busy year of releases and an EP scheduled for release in the early summer. The 20-year-old independent artist is as raw and emotionally exposed as he has ever been in this most recent project, which was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered by him alone in his bedroom at home.

In this project, Charles is bravely exposing himself to the public because he wants people to realize that vulnerability is necessary and contributes to character development. The young man is on a mission to inspire young people and make a difference in society after the success of his previous two singles, “Tired Eyes” and “Dandelion,” and with a growing community of followers on TikTok and Instagram. His first step is to demonstrate through his music that it’s acceptable to not be okay and that overcoming adversity is a step toward greatness.

The second single from the “Moonlight/Black and White” project is titled “Black and White.” The song is dominated by a somber sense of poignancy, with the artist reflecting on issues like society and how he sometimes feels alone and excluded. The production and sound did a fantastic job of capturing this tone, but despite the obvious sadness, there is an underlying sense of warmth that occasionally feels almost rousing. The release of “Black and White” is a really good one that has clearly had a lot of heart and soul poured into it, and it continues to establish Charles as a special talent.

The song “Black and White” is about the desire to escape reality and adopt a different point of view. Charles created this song while taking a break from social media and reflecting on all the things that this society prioritizes. He wanted the lyrics to this song to reflect how he felt like an outcast. The song’s lyrics describe how Charles felt trapped when he wanted to return to a time of happiness and nostalgia but was tired and alone; he felt trapped. When asked about the idea of love, which is prominently discussed in “Black and White,” he replied, “I’m a hopeless romantic, and I believe in true love just like you see in movies.” I know it’s corny but I believe in it, always have done”.

When you reach the heart of “Black and White,” the bass is rolling, the percussion is tapping off in the distance, and the guitars are all strumming the melody together, that’s when the magic happens. The layers and warm tones that make up the vocal shine through the instrumental fog and glow in the night, transporting you to a location far from where you started.

Emerging UK artist CHARLES HS has a sound that feels entirely and distinctly his own thanks to his thoughtful sound and distinctive DIY production. There is something special about the artist and the way that he feels quite unlike anything else, from his moody, atmospheric soundscapes to the personality that drips from his frequently melancholy vocal performances.
