“I Don’t Drive A Truck” by Matt Burke is a song inspired by his upbringing and childhood in Florida
Matt Burke, a musician based in Nashville, has been involved in the music business since 2010. The Matt Burke Band, Burke’s full band project, came to an end when Ellis, a longtime friend, and musical partner, died unexpectedly in 2018. Burke has since shifted his focus to songwriting as a solo artist. When everything seemed to be going well, COVID-19 happened. Burke showcases the many facets of his musical personality while maintaining his own style. No matter what genre Burke is exploring, his music is always sincere and genuine. He doesn’t give up easily.
On December 16, 2022, Matt Burke released his brand-new song, “I Don’t Drive a Truck,” a catchy country rock song that represents Burke’s Florida roots. Burke has been putting out a steady stream of new music since moving to Nashville in 2019 and has been compared to Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers, and Zach Bryan.
“I Don’t Drive a Truck,” tells the story of Burke’s upbringing in Florida, which was more alligator-dollar-store-trailer-park country than 4×4-buck-hunting-bass-pro-shop country. There were a lot of rednecks around when Burke was growing up in Florida, but since he didn’t drive a truck or dress accordingly, he wasn’t one of them. They always wanted to mess with the kids who had long hair and played music. But he was raised by Waylon, Willie, Merle, and Hank; he spent his entire life in a small town in central Florida. Burke and his father spent countless hours out on the St. John’s River fishing. Growing up, Burke and his buddies went muddin’ and had pallet and tire fire parties in the woods. People are so quick to judge what it means to be “country,” and he believes this song comes from that place.
“I Don’t Drive A Truck” has an appealing vocal, excellent guitar playing, and a rhythmic groove that will keep you cruising down the freeway. Additionally, you won’t be able to help but sing along when the chorus begins. From the guitars and percussion to Burke‘s strong vocals, this song has all the qualities of a great country song. The song begins with quiet guitar work that explodes into full-swing guitar work before Matte’s strong and jubilant vocals enter. Burke gets his inspiration for his lyrics from his memories of his childhood in Florida.
“I don’t drive a truck, but I sure know how to rock.” As the song progresses, so does the sense of excitement and joy that it evokes. The lyrics are written in such a way that you feel like you’re right there in the middle of it all, experiencing everything firsthand. The composition creates an incredibly liberating and exhilarating feeling that is sure to put a smile on your face. This song is sure to be a hit with country music fans, and it adds to Burke’s already impressive song catalog.
“I Don’t Drive a Truck” is a song about growing up in Florida, as previously mentioned, which is chastised for not being truly Southern, and Burke believes it stems from moving to Nashville as a non-traditional country artist and being expected to fit the Nashville-country mold.
Burke continues to make waves in the Americana and country music markets with an eagerly anticipated body of work that will be released over the course of next year. Burke’s voice has been discovered, and his sound has been defined. Check out Matte Burke’s “I Don’t Drive A Truck” if you enjoy good music in general or country music in particular.
