Faithfulness: Aurealis is described as a studio-based project rooted in atmosphere and storytelling. What inspired you to build your identity around that approach rather than traditional performance?
Aurealis: I think it came naturally from the way I experience music. I’ve always been drawn to songs that feel like they open a door into another emotional space. For Aurealis, the studio became the place where I could build those worlds fully – not just through the song itself, but through mood, texture, visuals, and story.
Traditional performance is powerful, but Aurealis is more focused on recorded music and visual storytelling. That gives me the freedom to create something cinematic and immersive, where each release can feel like its own little world for listeners to step into.
Faithfulness: Your work consistently explores emotional edges like love, loss, and resilience. What draws you to these themes, and how do they continue to evolve for you?
Aurealis: Those themes are the places where I think people are most human. Love, loss, longing, fear, hope, resilience – those are the emotions that stay with us and shape us. I’m drawn to them because they feel honest.
As I continue creating, those themes keep evolving. Earlier on, I may have written from the immediate feeling of something happening. Now I think I’m also interested in what comes after – how people survive, how they transform, and how they carry light forward even after difficult seasons.
Faithfulness: There’s a strong cinematic quality in your sound. At what point did you begin to see your music as something visual as well as sonic?
Aurealis: I think the visual side was always there in my mind, even before I had the ability to fully bring it forward. When I write, I often feel a mood or scene around the song. It might be a night drive, rain on a window, a city glowing in the distance, or someone standing alone in a moment of realization.
With Aurealis, the visual world became a way to make those inner images visible. The music and visuals started feeling like two parts of the same language.
Faithfulness: You focus heavily on recorded worlds rather than live shows. How does that creative freedom shape the way you construct your music?
Aurealis: It gives me room to think of each song almost like a film scene or emotional landscape. I’m not limited by what has to happen on a stage in real time, so I can focus on atmosphere, layered vocals, production details, and the emotional arc of the recording itself.
That freedom lets me build songs that feel intimate but also expansive. I can follow what the song wants to become, whether that means something danceable, cinematic, fragile, shadowy, or bright.
Faithfulness: As a project rooted in introspection and atmosphere, how do you maintain authenticity while still creating something expansive and immersive?
Aurealis: For me, authenticity starts with the emotion. No matter how atmospheric or cinematic the production becomes, the song has to begin from something real. If the feeling is not honest, the world around it will not matter.
The immersive side is really an extension of that emotion. The visuals, production, and atmosphere are not there to hide the personal meaning – they are there to give it shape. I want the songs to feel personal, but also open enough for listeners to find their own experiences inside them.
Faithfulness: “Fire in Rain” feels deeply layered both emotionally and sonically. What was the initial spark that led to the creation of this song?
Aurealis: The first spark of “Fire in Rain” came from a real emotional place. At first, it felt like a love song – trying to hold onto a flame when life keeps doing everything it can to put it out.
The chorus came first, which is usually what happens for me. That central image of fire existing inside the rain felt powerful, because it captured both vulnerability and resistance. From there, the rest of the song started to reveal itself.
Faithfulness: You mentioned the song revealed a deeper meaning over time. When did you realize it was about more than love and relationships?
Aurealis: That realization came as I lived with the song. The more I returned to it, the more I understood that the flame was not only about romance or one relationship. It was about the inner spark people carry – the part of us that wants to keep hoping, feeling, loving, and believing even when life becomes heavy.
Once I saw that, the song opened up. It became less about one story and more about something shared.
Faithfulness: The idea of “keeping your inner light alive” sits at the core of the song. What does that concept personally mean to you?
Aurealis: To me, it means protecting the part of yourself that still believes in beauty, connection, possibility, and hope. Life can wear people down. It can make you quieter, more guarded, or afraid to hope too much.
Keeping your inner light alive does not mean pretending everything is easy. It means choosing not to let difficult times take away the most essential part of who you are.
Faithfulness: The production carries a glowing late-night atmosphere. How intentional was that mood, and what did you want listeners to feel within it?
Aurealis: That mood was very intentional. I wanted the production to feel luminous but emotional – kind of like rain at night with city lights reflecting through it. There is sadness in the song, but I didn’t want it to feel hopeless.
I wanted listeners to feel surrounded by something beautiful while still feeling the ache underneath it. That contrast is important to Aurealis: light and shadow existing together.
Faithfulness: There’s a balance between danceable energy and emotional depth in “Fire in Rain.” How did you navigate that duality during production?
Aurealis: That duality is a big part of the Aurealis sound. I love songs that make you feel something deeply but also make you want to move through it. Sometimes a danceable rhythm can make a difficult emotion feel survivable.
With “Fire in Rain,” the production needed movement and lift, but it could not lose the vulnerability of the lyrics. The goal was to let the song glow without erasing the storm inside it.
Faithfulness: Compared to Shadow of a Doubt, this release feels more luminous and human. What shifted creatively between the two works?
Aurealis: “Shadow of a Doubt” lives more in the darker side of Aurealis. It carries tension, uncertainty, and a sense of emotional erosion. “Fire in Rain” still has sadness and struggle in it, but it reaches toward warmth and connection in a more open way.
I do not see them as opposites as much as different rooms in the same world. One explores shadow and doubt, while the other protects light through the storm. Together, they show more of the full emotional range of Aurealis.
Faithfulness: The visual world around “Fire in Rain” plays a strong role in its identity. How did you approach translating the song’s emotion into imagery?
Aurealis: The image of magical colored rain became the heart of the entire visual concept. I wanted the rain to feel impossible and beautiful, magical – something that could wash away the weight of the world, even if only for a few minutes.
From there, it felt important for the video to include different people and different moments of connection. The song is not only about one person or one relationship. It is about the shared human experience of weathering storms and still finding beauty.
Faithfulness: The song carries a bittersweet yet hopeful tone. How important is it for you to leave listeners with a sense of light, even in heavier themes?
Aurealis: It is very important. I am drawn to heavier emotions, but I do not want to leave people trapped inside them. Even when a song explores sadness, longing, fear, or loss, I usually want there to be some kind of light – even if it is small.
That light does not have to mean a perfect happy ending. Sometimes it is simply the feeling that you are still here, still feeling, still capable of becoming something more.
Faithfulness: When listeners step into “Fire in Rain,” what moment or feeling do you hope stays with them long after the song ends?
Aurealis: I hope they leave with the feeling that their inner spark is worth protecting. Maybe the song reminds them of someone they love, or something they have survived, or a part of themselves they are trying not to lose.
More than anything, I hope it gives people a sense of connection – the feeling that they are not alone in trying to keep their fire alive.
Faithfulness: Looking ahead, how do you see this release shaping the next phase of Aurealis as both a sonic and visual project?
Aurealis: “Fire in Rain” feels like an important step in defining the emotional and visual world of Aurealis. It shows the more luminous, human, and hopeful side of the project, while still carrying depth and vulnerability.
Going forward, I want to keep expanding that world. Some upcoming material explores darker, more cinematic territory, while other songs bring more movement, energy, and light. To me, Aurealis exists in that space between light and shadow, and “Fire in Rain” helps open the door a little wider.
