Hi everyone, it’s your host Faithfulness, and today I have with me Reetoxa from Melbourne, Australia. Reetoxa joins us to share insight into his musical journey while spotlighting his debut original single, “The Lisa Song,” released on 06 May 2026. This track marks the very beginning of his recorded artistry, carrying the emotional weight of an unexpected encounter that transformed into lifelong inspiration. “The Lisa Song” stands as both a memory and a turning point, capturing the exact moment creativity was sparked in real time at a live performance.
Welcome, Reetoxa. Before we dive in, here is what you need to know about this Melbourne-based band fronted by Jason McKee. After decades of songwriting and artistic persistence, Jason eventually connected with producer Simon Moro, setting in motion the creation of his first official body of work. The project represents years of lived experience, musical exploration, and an unwavering commitment to finally bring his ideas into a finished recording.
“The Lisa Song” was born during a Spiderbait gig at the Forum Theatre, where Jason, having been stood up for a date, attended the show alone and ended up seated across from a girl named Lisa. Her playful energy, striking presence, and a spontaneous moment under the stage lights where a simple photo turned into something almost cinematic ignited Jason’s imagination. A brief conversation about music, ambition, and identity followed, leaving a lasting imprint on him, even as she disappeared after the night. That encounter ultimately pushed him to leave university behind, begin recording seriously with Simon Moro, and commit fully to his music career, still carrying the memory of Lisa into every performance and every new song.

Having this brief Introduction, I’m sure new and current fans must be excited about our Interview today.
INTERVIEW
Faithfulness: Your journey stretches across decades of songwriting. When did music first become something you knew you couldn’t walk away from?
Jason Mckee: When I wrote amber off the first record my whole life changed. I tried other careers but the melodies kept coming back. When I wrote Bobbie about my mum dying while I was in prison for six months I knew I had to do something.
Faithfulness: You first began shaping what would become your wider creative world as early as 1997. What kind of artistic hunger were you carrying back then?
Jason Mckee: I was desperate to be an artist. I would try and wrote a song every day.
Faithfulness: The idea of “Soliloquy” was inspired by literature and Shakespeare. How did that influence reshape the way you think about storytelling in music?
Jason Mckee: Shakespeare can be simple stories but uses amazing imagery and rhyming. I’d like to do that too !
Faithfulness: Over the years, life interrupted and paused the project in different ways. How did those breaks shape who Reetoxa is today?
Jason Mckee: I think it’s made me more interesting than just someone who was a musician for over 30 years. There may not be cool photos of me skinny with long hair on stage but I’ll get there in the end.
Faithfulness: Looking back at those early voice notes and sketches, what do you feel that younger creative version of you was really reaching for?
Jason Mckee: I was desperate to run away and have adventure. My home life was so meak and I hated school. Life was miserable and I saw music as my escape.
Faithfulness: “The Lisa Song” begins with a real moment at the Forum Theatre during a Spiderbait gig. Can you take us back into that night as you remember it unfolding?
Jason Mckee: I was stood up for a date and was in a foul mood. At first I thought they were trying to get me kicked out of the vip booth but Lisa was so kind. Her body language was amazing so I started writing the song. I should have been trying to chat her up. Silly me.

Faithfulness: The song was born from a mix of being stood up for a date and then unexpectedly meeting Lisa. How did that emotional contrast shape the heart of the record?
Jason Mckee: Lisa asked to hear a song and what I do and I thought why am I at school when all I want to do is be a musician ? Lisa made me realise I look silly saying I’m a song writer without an album.
Faithfulness: There’s a moment where Lisa steps into the camera light and it changes everything. What was it about that split-second image that stayed with you creatively?
Jason Mckee: Unfortunately I have lost the photo but it looked like a sun was on her shoulders with a mixture of the lights and her blonde hair. It was a magical photo.
Faithfulness: Lisa asking to hear your music when all you had were voice notes feels pivotal. How did that moment shift how you saw yourself as an artist?
Jason Mckee: I felt ridiculous and needed to get my act together. If she asked now I’d have 40 released songs to show her lol. I talk about my albums now and people are so supportive. Lisa changed my whole life.
Faithfulness: That night eventually led you to call Simon Moro and begin recording properly. Did it feel like the beginning of your career was being pulled into motion?
Jason Mckee: Yeah I felt “the Lisa song” was going to be a hit from the first record but it belonged on the second record. It was hard to pick what songs to go on what album.
Faithfulness: The story closes with Lisa disappearing after asking you to dance to “Old Man Sam.” Why did that ending feel important to the emotional truth of the song?
Jason Mckee: I guess it proved I was the shy one if she could dance in front of all the vip guests in the booth. Maybe we were both similar ? I guess I’ll never know. A girl like that could be married with children seven years later lol.
Faithfulness: Walking home through Southbank, you made the decision to step fully into music. Was that a sudden decision or something that had been building inside you for years?
Jason Mckee: It had been building for years but I thought I had to go to school to learn to manage myself and record. That was so silly people would have loved to help me. I was such a fool.

Faithfulness: Lisa becomes almost myth-like in the story. Do you see her more as a real person, or as a symbol of the turning point that changed everything?
Jason Mckee: I try to find her at gigs etc but I don’t know what I would say. I fear she may think I over reacted or maybe she would be pleased to have helped me ? Either way I missed out on at least a friend and that would have been handy during covid. A few weeks later we were in lockdown.
Faithfulness: If Lisa were to hear “The Lisa Song” today, what feeling would you hope reaches her first?
Jason Mckee: I just hoped she would laugh and like the song. We even have Lisa merch for sale so maybe I could buy her a t shirt and mug lol.
Faithfulness: As this release opens a new chapter for you, what does it represent about where your story is heading next?
Jason Mckee: I am recording the demos for the third album now. It’s a more fun party type record.

HAVING LISTENED TO ‘The Lisa Song’, HERE ARE MY HONEST THOUGHTS
“The Lisa Song” by Reetoxa delivers a hypnotic modern pop experience built on atmospheric minimalism and emotional restraint. The production leans on shimmering electronic textures, steady rhythmic pulses, and spacious instrumentation that allows every melodic detail to settle naturally. Instead of overcrowding the arrangement, the song embraces subtlety, creating an immersive soundscape that feels reflective, intimate, and emotionally suspended. The gradual progression toward a soft dance-oriented energy adds movement without disrupting the track’s calm and meditative foundation. Jason McKee’s vocal performance strengthens the emotional weight of the song through its conversational and understated delivery. His relaxed tone allows the vulnerability within the lyrics to surface organically, making repeated phrases like “Hey Lisa, why are you so shy?” feel hypnotic and memorable. The balance between dreamy melodies, restrained production, and sincere storytelling gives “The Lisa Song” a lingering emotional presence that remains long after the closing fade.
