Faithfulness: Shelia, before we dive into your latest release, I’d love to start at the beginning. Looking back on your journey, what were some of the earliest experiences that made you realize music was more than a passion for you and could become a lifelong ministry?
Shelia Moore-Piper: I started writing music at 8 years old. I always loved to write music. I would also learn songs on the piano and play for others when asked plus I could also sing. However; wasn’t till years later I realized, I had something special vocally and that my songwriting gifts could make room for me by not only writing songs for myself but co-writing with others also.
Faithfulness: You often describe music as your ministry. How has that understanding shaped not only the songs you create but also the way you connect with listeners across different stages of your career?
Shelia Moore-Piper: Whenever I release a song, God reminds me that this is what’s needed for the current climate. For example, “Show Love” is a simple song, but it carries a HUGE impact and people can relate. I always say it’s good to release what’s needed, not something for the sake of release. You must be able to discern and read the room, and God helps me a lot with this.
Faithfulness: Over the years, gospel and inspirational music have continued to evolve. How have you managed to embrace those changes while still remaining true to the message and sound that define you as an artist?
Shelia Moore-Piper: I am a Christian Soul Artist. I have no problem evolving, and I don’t let others place me in a box. At the beginning of my career; I didn’t quite know the direction I wanted to go but; I now know to stay true to myself and believe whatever God gives me; it’s going to go. I must trust God’s lead!
Faithfulness: Building an independent label and production company with your husband Glenn “GP” Piper was a significant step. What inspired that decision, and what have been some of the most meaningful lessons you’ve learned from creating your own platform?
Shelia Moore-Piper: We had separate companies at first, Glenn and I. But we both decided it was better to put our talents together to create the independent label “BDM/Ugroove Music”. We don’t actually sign artists, but we are a compliment to others’ calling. So; when they come to us for help, we remind others of our mission and make sure they understand what we are and so far, it’s working for us
Faithfulness: From Tha Story Told Twice to The Love/Soul Session Vol. 1, your catalog reflects both artistic growth and spiritual purpose. When you reflect on that body of work today, what moments make you feel most grateful?
Shelia Moore-Piper: All of my journeys help me feel the most grateful. Being an artist sometimes requires pivoting, and you must learn that some things come with the territory. So; I felt most grateful when I showed up singing and the audience was quiet but, when I take the stage or if they heard a song; they usually stand up and the audience shares the moment with me. I love changing the audience’s minds!
Faithfulness: Your new single “Show Love” arrives with a message that feels especially relevant in today’s world. What was happening in your heart and mind when the song first began to take shape?
Shelia Moore-Piper: The song “Show Love” was written years ago! I was going through some songs on my disc and “Show Love” in Demo form popped up. My hubby heard it and said; we got to re-do this song and give it an uplift. The more it started taking shape and adding the horns; I got extremely excited! It’s a simple song but; it carries a huge mantle!
Faithfulness: One of the most striking aspects of “Show Love” is how naturally encouragement, faith, and genuine affection coexist within the song. How did you approach balancing those themes while writing and recording them?
Shelia Moore-Piper: The song required a facelift for our current climate in which we all live in. So; we reconstructed the song to make sure it fits what’s happening now in our world! God guided us to make sure we didn’t overdo it but; make it simple enough where everyone who listens can grasp the concept.
Faithfulness: The production blends soulful grooves, smooth horns, rich harmonies, and uplifting energy. Can you take us inside the creative process and share how the sonic identity of “Show Love” was developed?
Shelia Moore-Piper: First, the lyrics were developed and reconstructed first, then the elements of music and lastly the horns were added to give that spice that was needed.
Faithfulness: Throughout the single, listeners are reminded that good things are on the way and that all things are possible with God. Was there a personal experience or season in your life that strengthened your conviction behind those words?
Shelia Moore-Piper: Yes, there have been several experiences, however; the main thing is to remember that “Love is the greatest give we can give ourselves and others. Love God, and Love others as you love yourself but, you got to remember it starts with loving God. He then imparts his “Love” inside us and that helps us not only love ourselves but; others also.
Faithfulness: The collaboration between you and Glenn has produced a distinctive musical chemistry over the years. What makes your creative partnership so effective, and how did that dynamic influence this particular release?
Shelia Moore-Piper: My hubby and I work well together, and he helps me be effective, plus he makes sure I give the song what’s needed vocally with expression and not overdo it. If I started doing too much, he would always tell me to pull back. It’s important to give the song exactly what it needs, instead of what it doesn’t. Giving a song balance is very important!!
Faithfulness: In an era where many songs focus on division, conflict, or uncertainty, “Show Love” chooses optimism and compassion. Why was it important for you to release this message at this point in time?
Shelia Moore-Piper: Because there are songs that focus on division, conflict etc. But God’s Love remains through it all and it’s time to focus also on the Love of God and his Love for us!
Faithfulness: “Show Love” serves as an introduction to your upcoming album, The Love/Soul Session Vol. 2. In what ways does this single represent the larger story and musical direction listeners can expect from the project?
Shelia Moore-Piper: It’s the first single from the upcoming project, and it sets the standard for what the listeners can expect for The Love/Soul Session Vol. 2. All songs won’t be like “Show Love”, but each song will have its own distinct sound and will certainly speak to the people! I am super, duper excited!!! #yesssssssss!
Faithfulness: Soul music has always had the power to heal, inspire, and bring people together. What role do you believe songs like “Show Love” can play in helping listeners navigate the challenges of everyday life?
Shelia Moore-Piper: It can change people’s lives if they give it a chance! Love covers a huge multitude, so it’s time to start incorporating it into our lives if we haven’t already because Love is a huge force that should be implemented in our lives every day!
Faithfulness: As you continue building your legacy through music and ministry, what are some of the dreams or goals that still inspire you to keep creating and sharing your gifts with the world?
Shelia Moore-Piper: My goals are to keep moving forward to where God places me and or wants me to go! It’s all about his purpose and destiny for my life and sharing the gifts he’s given me is a huge component.
Faithfulness: Finally, for anyone discovering your music for the very first time through “Show Love,” what would you like them to understand about who Shelia Moore-Piper is, both as an artist and as a person?
Shelia Moore-Piper: I am still growing and learning as a person and as an artist but, best believe; I am striving to make sure God’s love shines bright through me and transfers over to others!
