50mething — O oh it's AI

Hello everyone it’s your host Daniel from Dulaxi, and today I have with me the exceptional solo artist, 50mething from Ealing, England. And 50mething is here to discuss his recent original single “O oh it’s AI” which was released on 28 May 2026. So, welcome, 50mething! But before we begin our interview, to our audience; here is what you need to know about this artist.

50mething is a solo artist based in Ealing, England, known for creating music in complete creative isolation, handling every stage of production independently from conception to completion. A former dancer and garden builder, he entered the music space later in life, building a catalogue of around 70 unreleased tracks shaped by personal experience, social observation, and political awareness. His journey into music followed a period of reflection after a cancer diagnosis in 2024, which led to his first release, “Slowly through the night,” a deeply personal work that marked both recovery and artistic rebirth. Working entirely from a home studio, 50mething draws strong inspiration from the legendary Prince, channeling that influence into a distinctive sound defined by honesty, clarity of vision, and emotional depth. Now releasing music gradually through Ditto, his work reflects both the confidence of maturity and the courage to confront subjects often avoided in mainstream music. His latest single, “O oh it’s AI,” released on 28 May 2026, is a bold and timely commentary on the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence in modern society, inspired by his observation of its constant and overwhelming presence. The track examines both the benefits and darker consequences of AI, particularly job displacement and the exploitation of vulnerable groups, especially women and children, while highlighting concerns about how quickly the technology is reshaping daily life. Through this release, 50mething positions himself as an artist unafraid to engage directly with pressing global issues, using music as a reflective space to question the direction of contemporary technological and social change.

Having this brief Introduction about 50mething, I’m sure new and current fans must be excited about our Interview today.

INTERVIEW SESSION

Daniel: How would you introduce yourself as an artist and describe the identity behind your project “50mething,” especially given your unconventional entry into the music industry later in life?

50mething: Using the moniker “50mething”, or something similar, was important in order to present as authentic. The artist name suggests age, maturity and experience. I would like to think it is never too late to pursue something if you care enough about it.

Daniel: Growing up in Ealing, England, and working independently in complete creative isolation, how has your environment shaped the sound, perspective, and emotional depth of your music?

50mething: I actually grew up in Chester, NW England and moved down to London at sixteen. I have been in the Ealing area now for some thirty years. Working alone in all the aspects of creativity is me anyway. A lone wolf in all aspects. Finding the necessary emotional depth in a variety of locations (as I have moved a few times recently) has been challenging. I can still get there though – regardless.

Daniel: You’ve mentioned Prince as a constant influence in your creative background, how has his artistry shaped your approach to sound, production, and overall musical philosophy?

50mething: I remember being absolutely bowled over at “1999’ and Purple rain” when they were released. So far from convention. Musically and creatively. Not forgetting other artists he teamed up with; Wendy and Lisa! I think subconsciously, when I am writing, I am always looking for a different path. So as not to sound too main stream. I was turned down from a playlist pitch for being experimental – fine by me!.

Daniel: “O oh it’s AI” confronts the rise of artificial intelligence, what specific observations or real-life experiences first pushed you to turn this theme into a full single?

50mething: Deep fake AI came to my attention after watching a documentary on Storyville. A young woman tries to discover who used her face “in another space” to create something she had no involvement with. Certain celebrities have been victims and even worse young children (mostly girls).

Daniel: The song highlights concerns around job displacement and the exploitation of vulnerable groups, how did you approach translating such heavy societal issues into lyrical and musical form without losing emotional impact?

50mething: I am happy that I got my point across with this release. I am afraid, though, it is a bigger issue for just one track. I am working on a part two at the moment.

Daniel: Are there particular lines or lyrical moments in “O oh it’s AI” that you feel best capture your warning or message about the unchecked spread of AI? What makes those lines stand out to you personally?

50mething: I guess when the chorus comes in you get a proper understanding of the meaning of the track.

Daniel: The track acknowledges both the positive and negative sides of AI, how did you balance that duality within the song’s tone and structure?

50mething: The song is mostly negative about AI and technology in general. Being able to create accounts and hide behind a false name. Being able to manipulate in order to control and blackmail.

Daniel: In the broader context of modern music, what do you feel makes “O oh it’s AI” stand out as a statement piece addressing today’s technological reality?

50mething: We are already aware, in the music industry, the competitive nature of AI. Now it is flooding into all sectors. The track is a statement of fact regarding a small area of a greater coming problem.

Daniel: As a solo artist working entirely alone from conception to completion, what does your creative process look like when building a track from initial idea to finished record?

50mething: The creative process is fairly relaxed. There are multiple songs at any one time. I do upload half finished tracks to listen to and often get ideas whist in the gym or walking.

Daniel: How do you structure your music compositionally, do you start with lyrics, melody, rhythm, or an emotional concept when building a song like this?

50mething: A bit of everything all at once really. I have recently taken to creating a short musical riff, percussion and some melody lines. Looping them and letting it all sink in.

Daniel: With “O oh it’s AI” carrying such a strong message, how did you ensure that the production supported the theme rather than overwhelming or distracting from it?

50mething: The song, although of a serious nature, is slightly tongue in cheek. I feel the music and lyrics balance well whilst making the statement.

Daniel: Your journey into music came later in life after experiences as a dancer and garden builder, how have those earlier life chapters influenced your artistic perspective today?

50mething: Both the dancing and garden construction could be tough physically. Both were creative in one way or another. Now my creative outlet is the music so there is a common theme throughout.

Daniel: You’ve shared that your first release was inspired by a personal cancer diagnosis, how has that experience shaped your emotional honesty and creative direction as an artist?

50mething: When you go through an experience like that it is a bit sobering. In all honesty it did set the tone for the fourth album “music to be mindful of.” Don’t get me wrong, its not all doom and gloom. Some of the tracks with a serious subject matter have been given a lighter touch.
That experience along with another have certainly changed my perspective of people and the world.

Daniel: At 58, stepping into the music industry with a large back catalogue, what has been the most challenging and most rewarding part of finally sharing your work publicly?

50mething: Getting the music to people seems to be the biggest hurdle. With out selling out anyway. It is good to see the work in a playlist though. And to come upon a google search.

Daniel: You mention having around 70 unreleased tracks, how do you decide which songs feel ready for release and what story do you want this gradual rollout to tell?

50mething: Some tracks were released with a specific date in mind. Martin Luther King day and International Women’s day. I would like to think there is consistency in the song writing and performance.

Daniel: You’ve described being “old enough to know better,” yet still choosing to create and release music, what drives that continued urgency and expression at this stage of your life?

50mething: I’m not a great fan of the concept of retirement anyway. It’s good to have a sense of purpose. Getting up and doing some kind of 9-5 makes the enjoyment of downtime sweeter. It seems the there is plenty of subject matter out there to write about also.

Daniel: How have listeners or early audiences responded to the message behind “O oh it’s AI,” especially its commentary on modern technological society?

50mething: I haven’t received any specific feedback yet. The odd emoji on social media. There won’t be many people who aren’t affected by it though.

Daniel: What kind of emotional or intellectual reaction do you hope audiences take away after hearing the song for the first time?

50mething: I imagine most people will resonate with the main message. It might take another listen to fully sink in.

Daniel: Looking ahead, how do you see your sound or message evolving as you continue releasing music from your back catalogue?

50mething: With consistency. Trying to push boundaries and calling things out when needed.

Daniel: Beyond “O oh it’s AI,” what future themes or projects are you most interested in exploring as you continue building your artistic legacy?

50mething: I have just released a track called “these fine lines” about finding love and peace later in life. A tribute track to Prince is next followed by “Obsession” about my love for music.

Having Had A Close Listen To This Sharply Reflective And Caution-driven Single, Here’s My Thought.

Having taken a close listen to 50mething’s “O oh it’s AI”, I find it striking how the track resists turning artificial intelligence into spectacle and instead treats it as a lived, unsettling reality already shaping human existence. From my perspective, the most compelling element is the vocal delivery, which stays deliberately restrained and observational rather than emotional or explosive, creating the feeling of someone calmly documenting a world that is quietly slipping out of human control. That controlled cadence gives space for the lyrics to breathe, and it makes the unease feel more authentic, as though the artist is not performing fear but recording it. Lyrically, the song hits its strongest emotional points when it confronts identity and exploitation, especially in the line “Praise my face and put it in another space,” which I interpret as a stark image of the self being detached, copied, and repurposed without consent in a digital system that no longer guarantees ownership of one’s own likeness. The economic tension in “Someone’s making money now with AI” sharpens this further, pointing to a reality where technological advancement creates profit for some while quietly destabilizing the creative and professional security of others, while the recurring idea of innocence being eroded extends the warning toward broader human vulnerability, especially in spaces where manipulation becomes easier and harder to trace. Musically, the synth-driven production feels intentionally clinical, with crisp percussion, tightly controlled bass, and layered electronic textures that mirror the very artificiality the song is questioning, and I find the contrast between sparse verses and fuller choruses effective in mirroring how these concerns expand from personal anxiety into collective urgency. Even the subtle vocal processing adds another layer of meaning, blurring human presence with machine-like texture in a way that reinforces the theme rather than distracting from it. Overall, the track feels carefully constructed in every detail, not just as a commentary on technology, but as an immersive reflection on what it means to remain human inside a rapidly automated world.
