Interview

To begin with, let’s review your recent work. What is the Inspiration behind ‘She Don’t Got It All’?

Answer: My inspiration came from my experience with one of my girl friends who had a similar way of being sort of rude in our friendship and in relationships.

What is the inspiration behind the lyrics?

Answer: I wanted to try some terms like “square” to express who the girl in the song really is. I was listening to some rockers like Eddie Cochran and Little Richard while I had the melody in my head.

This is quite a huge project for you, what does it mean to you as an individual?

Answer: It means the world!! This (in my opinion) was my first (of more to come) original rock n roll songs that resonated with me and my stage presence. Martin Lee (the producer) did a great job with helping me express that in the booth of his studio.

Could you describe how this release is different from your previous work and where this one belongs in the sequence of your career?

Answer: My previous project was a more subtle song called, “Forever, The Fool”. It told a heartbreak story about how someone like me can’t find someone to love. “She Don’t Got It All” is practically the next part, where you know someone who probably doesn’t deserve love just because she’s acting poorly around the people you care about. Both songs can also be separated, but where’s the fun in that?

What do you wish people to get from ‘She Don’t Got It All’?

Answer: In general, I wrote this song for fun. It’s almost relatable that in almost every friend group, you have that one friend that’s cocky about how they can never be hated on or even threatened.

Is there a particular song other than this one, you are keen on that seems to communicate your message best and why?

Answer: One of the songs that brought up the idea was Eddie Cochran’s “I Don’t Like You No More”. I think it was a live performance I was listening to. But either way, it definitely was something about the way he expressed himself in his singing , and how he was definitely having fun. That’s all I want out of this song.

What are some of the difficulties you encountered and some of the highlights in ‘She Don’t Got It All’ making process?

Answer: One difficult moment I had with this release was figuring out how my saxophone player, Nick, was to perform. It took almost 2 weeks to get something really clean. We spent some time going over Little Richard and Fats Domino records to get an ideal sound. One fun highlight was seeing my former guitarist, Joe, recording his solo.

How do you see this project fitting in with the present stage of your life both as an individual and an artist?

Answer: I can see it in my personal life as something me and my friends can enjoy and talk about for hours and how I got to record more this year in 2025. For me as J-Mo On The Beat, the song was definitely needed for my act with my band. I enjoy all the originals we perform, but I know the people enjoy us rocking more, so this song is something that everyone can dance to.

Since you released a ‘She Don’t Got It All’, what has the reaction of the fans been?

Answer: The first week, I was messaged so many times about how great me and my friends sounded and they hope I continue the good work. Me and my band had a special release party the next day in Rochester, MN, and we had a fun time singing it there just as much as we did back in the Twin Cities.

How can your fans reach you and your music whether through the internet or in person?

Answer: They can always reach me through social media or in person at a show appearance. I’m always down for a conversation, especially before a show, as I sometimes get a bit nervous. But if they can’t, I do hope they enjoy my music.

Where does this release sit in the thick of those works in loads and loads of other work?

Answer: I’ll say it’s in the beginning of something I can’t wait to do more of.

What’s next for you after this release? Are there any new projects or surprises that are coming soon?

Answer: I will be releasing a 2 track EP titled, “Origin of The Fool” for Valentine’s Day. It’s something I thought I should do for fun as “Forever, The Fool” was a fun release and this EP has some bonus goodies for it. I’ll be planning some fun shows this year and hopefully…. a lot of new music.

How do you cope with the responsibilities of being an artist while trying to have a personal life?

Answer: It’s difficult at times. Some days, when the stress gets me, I don’t know what to do and even feel alone. But I’ve been lucky enough to manage myself and my time frame better. It also helps to have a close circle of family and friends that I trust.

What is one thing that your fans do not know about you but would want to reveal?

Answer: I may or may not have accidentally made a Christmas love song about a girl I was once into.

Would you like to add any concluding thoughts to your fans or new listeners hearing about you for the first time?

Answer: I just want to thank everyone in the J-Lighter community for your support as always. “She Don’t Got It All” is currently at 2k streams on Spotify and I’m thankful for Marty and the band for helping me put this number out. More to come, and I hope for the new folks hearing me for the first time, that enjoy the music and I get to meet them too in person someday. I love hearing how much I impact some young people like myself.
