INTERVIEW

Faithfulness: You’ve built a reputation for deeply cinematic rock. How did your roots in Austin, Texas shape that sound?

Arctic Wave: I grew up in Dallas, and have lived in every major TX market, every major CA market, NYC and spent significant time in the Caribbean.  Despite the “indie rock” moniker, which loosely fits, I was raised on R&B and funk – Ohio Players, Parliament, EWF, Con Funk Shun, Sly and the Family Stone. Gap Band, Kool & The Gang, Stevie, Prince, etc.  If the music didn’t “pop,” it didn’t get my attention.  I don’t intentionally try to incorporate certain styles, but that upbringing, plus a few years as a reggae keyboardist, sealed my musical roots.

Faithfulness: Your journey into music began through personal loss and transformation. How has that shaped the emotional core of your work?

Arctic Wave: We’ve released ~40 songs now.  I’ve learned that audiences react more to the “story” than the music.  My life experiences are an asset.  Whether substance abuse/recovery, family, love/romance, mortality, spirituality, etc., I realized that the best-performing songs were those that touched universal issues.  Consequently, I lean into this songwriting approach.  For example, my best friend died two months ago.  We’re recording a song called, “Gone Too Soon.”  I hope listeners like the song, but expect many people will relate – we’ve all had losses, whether parent, grandparent, friend, etc.

Faithfulness: At what point did you stop feeling like a project and start feeling like a fully formed identity or world?

Arctic Wave: We started as a project … record ~12 of the then-50 songs I had written.  Then the exceptionally skilled musicians, which have hits and Grammy’s and great resumes, took my tunes up several levels – the output was great.  I kept writing (150 now) and we’ve recorded ~60, and only one song partially missed my original mark, which is an exceptional success rate.  I genuinely appreciate all the contributors, partially because they are uber-skilled and partially because they ensure that the music conveys my intended message.

Faithfulness: Your music is known for emotional honesty. How do you protect that vulnerability while still making expansive, cinematic records?

Arctic Wave: TBH, I’m not so worried about protection.  Everyone is challenged in life.  Best case, I write songs that resonate, and the music works in support of the message.  A woman once told me, “I really felt that song’s lyrics, and the music moved me.”  I thought, “Perfect!”

Faithfulness: “Heart Missed A Beat” opens with an actual heartbeat. What was the creative intention behind starting the song so literally and symbolically?

Arctic Wave: Glad you noticed.  That insertion was my suggestion.  The intent was to move from the figurative to the literal … when I met my wife, my heart actually “missed a beat.”  Ten years later, it still does!

Faithfulness: By the final chorus, the track feels almost transcendent. What emotional shift were you hoping listeners to experience at that point?

Arctic Wave: Great question. The chorus, especially the final chorus, is my favorite part of the song.  I wanted to make the music match the warmth/love that my wife and I share.  The follow-on after my heart missed the original beat.  I am blessed to be married to the best woman on the planet.

Faithfulness: What do you hope listeners take away the first time they hear “Heart Missed A Beat”?

Arctic Wave: I hope they say, “Dayum, he really loves that girl … and the groove is kinda funky!”

Faithfulness: If this song becomes a defining moment in your catalogue, what do you hope it ultimately says about love, timing, and human connection?

Arctic Wave: Love happens many ways – instantly (my case), gradually and in between.  The takeaway isn’t the genesis of love, but its after-effect … “spend my time with you, now my life’s complete.”

HAVING LISTENED TO ‘Heart Missed A Beat’, HERE ARE MY HONEST THOUGHTS

Arctic Wave’s “Heart Missed a Beat” is a heartfelt and cinematic exploration of the life-changing power of love. Opening with the sound of a heartbeat, the track immediately establishes an intimate atmosphere, drawing listeners into a deeply personal story inspired by the moment C.L. Turner first met the woman who would become his wife. From its opening seconds, the song balances vulnerability and anticipation, creating a narrative that feels both personal and universally relatable. Musically, the single thrives on the contrast between its warm, funk-infused groove and expansive rock textures. The production mirrors the emotional uncertainty of falling in love, shifting effortlessly between grounded rhythms and soaring cinematic moments. Turner’s restrained vocal delivery further enhances the authenticity of the story, allowing emotion to emerge naturally rather than through dramatic excess. Lyrically rich and emotionally resonant, “Heart Missed a Beat” captures the wonder of unexpected connection while reaffirming Arctic Wave’s talent for transforming lived experiences into memorable, deeply affecting songs.
