Introducing Realma, a sorceress at the center of a songwriter. Realma was created by Serbian-Chinese polymodal artist Ariadna Vrljanovic-Zhao as an intimate musical alter ego after a painful moment of losing oneself. Utilizing otherworldly narratives and sonorities to address every day in all of its beautiful and gloomy tones.
Realma started using songwriting as a transforming tool that provided a feeling of escape and reverie. The tracks represent various themes through inspirations from various musical genres, much like several kingdoms are mirrored in a sorceress’ crystals. combined with the pervasive witchy quality.
Numerous publications around the world, including,, Femikseta 9 and 10 – annual compilations of original music by Serbian female musicians – have included her songs, in addition to Rolling Stone India, Calvert Journal, Music Crowns, Zile si Nopti, Vreme, and many others.
Realma’s striking live performance videos take place in famous locations like the UNESCO World Heritage Site Felix Romuliana and the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac,” but her animated music videos, created in partnership with the renowned animator and artist Mihajlo Draga, have appeared in numerous international film festivals like Lift-Off Global Sessions, Flipbook Film Festival, and Animest. Most recently, Headliner.rs praised her Femix Fest performance as “Eclectic, distinct, and multidisciplinary,” and her track has advanced to the Top 3 semifinals of the MArte Live European competition.
The music of Realma is atavistic and postmodern, depressing and empowering, but most of all filmic and realistic. Realmaverse, the multi-genre audiovisual universe created based on Realma’s art songs, is filled with interesting characters and their compelling tales. With plans to expand the story worlds into the comic, tabletop RPG, and video game mediums, Realma and her team are currently exploring the intriguing prospects of turning this musical universe into a successful franchise.
Realma’s newest song, “Ashgrey Butterfly,” addresses real-life issues like social exhaustion, loneliness, and depression that are common in contemporary adolescence and young adulthood while once again gazing via neo-symbolism. The confusing words are moving in their grim slice of sarcasm, despite the fact that the twinkly music initially emanates a dreamy, euphoric reminiscence in the psychedelic combination of orchestral and synth textures:
“It’s a unique song because it has a Disney-like feel to it, especially in the way I play the instruments and sing, but it also has a hint of the teen-witchy 90s Charmed vibe. Some listeners might even hear Enya’s influence in the grandiose elements of the song. Fundamentally, though, the song’s lyrics portray a very intimate, never-ending struggle to find one’s place in the world when they constantly make them feel out of place. Perhaps the ashen butterfly and the color-obsessed bees seen here are metaphorically juxtaposed in a Dickinson-like manner. “In the sense that the poet’s contemplative, solitary lyrical space made use of analogous natural themes with gloomy overtones.” — REALMA
Like her earlier song, “Ashgrey Butterfly” is the latest in Realma’s extensive multimedia partnership with renowned animator and artist, Mihajlo Draga: “My major goal in creating the 2D animation was to highlight the youthfulness and nostalgia, that the music emphasizes.” To assist convey the same melancholy appeal found in the song, I, therefore, tried to mimic the traditional ink and watercolor art methods. The audience will see how the vibrant landscapes the character is fascinated by could be deceiving with the inclusion of sparkling colors that contrast the darker, sorrowful blues of the “lonely fairy.” –MIHAJLO DRAGA.
