That renewed creative direction grew from Flywheel’s history in Cork’s independent music scene. The band first emerged in the early 1990s, recording a 1995 radio session for RTÉ’s Dave Fanning before releasing their debut album, “She,” through Swedish label IWH Records in 1996. The album was later described by the Irish Examiner in 2021 as a “true lost classic.” Following a breakup after its release, Flywheel reunited in September 2020 during the first lifting of COVID restrictions, bringing Ann Marie Ryan, Mark Tangney, Kieran Curtin, and Paul Kelleher back together. Their renewed work has carried forward the atmospheric intensity of their early sound while giving Ryan’s vocals a more prominent place in the mix. With influences ranging from My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Cocteau Twins to The Fall and Gilla Band, Flywheel’s journey continues to connect past and present. “I Want to Join The Fall” captured that journey with a sound that was immersive, reflective, and deeply connected to the lasting power of music.
