Hello everyone, it’s your host Oliver from DULAXI, and today I’m delighted to be joined by the creative force behind The Bulletproof Souls, the London-based British rock project whose music brings together grit, melody, storytelling and a distinctly human sense of emotional uncertainty. Rooted in alternative rock, heartland rock, soul and blues influences, The Bulletproof Souls explore the experiences of people who do not always know how to say what they mean, and the latest EP, The L Word: Love Is Hard, places that idea firmly at the centre of the music.

Released on 3 September 2026, The L Word: Love Is Hard examines love, vulnerability and the difficulty of expressing feelings when a simple word can carry enormous emotional weight. With its gritty vocals, restrained guitars, memorable piano work and spacious arrangements, the project allows its stories to develop without forcing them into conventional emotional conclusions.

Before we begin our conversation with The Bulletproof Souls, here’s what you need to know about today’s featured project.

About The Bulletproof Souls

The story of The Bulletproof Souls began not in a rehearsal room, but on the pages of a crime novel. The project takes its name from The Bulletproof Souls, a novel written by J.W. Neville, and that literary beginning remains an important part of the project’s identity. Rather than treating music and fiction as completely separate worlds, The Bulletproof Souls have allowed both to grow from the same fascination with people, their contradictions, and the ways they continue moving forward after difficult experiences.

That storytelling instinct is central to the music. The Bulletproof Souls create songs around characters and situations in which what is left unsaid can be just as important as what is spoken. Their musical identity combines British rock with heartland rock, alternative rock, soul and occasional blues influences, moving between bruised ballads, guitar-driven material and darker late-night compositions. Throughout that range, the emphasis remains on lived-in vocals, strong melodies and arrangements that give the lyrics space.

That approach is particularly evident across The L Word: Love Is Hard. Released on 3 September 2026, the EP focuses on love not as a neat or sentimental idea, but as something complicated, vulnerable and sometimes difficult to express. The title track, “The L Word,” sits at the centre of that idea, using a restrained musical setting to explore the emotional weight behind saying something as simple as “I love you.”

The project does not depend on an oversized power-ballad climax to communicate its feelings. Instead, its emotional character comes from restraint, atmosphere and the contrast between gritty vocals and measured instrumentation. The wider EP moves through different shades of the band’s sound, allowing its central themes to develop through changing arrangements while retaining the rough-edged character associated with The Bulletproof Souls.

At its heart, The L Word: Love Is Hard continues the project’s interest in ordinary people dealing with extraordinary emotional difficulty. The EP explores the hesitation behind emotional honesty, while its broader musical and visual identity leaves room for both vulnerability and humour. It is a continuation of the same creative instinct that began with fiction, now expressed through songs, performances and imagery.

Having this brief introduction to today’s featured project, I’m sure both new listeners and longtime followers are excited to hear directly from The Bulletproof Souls. So, without further ado, let’s begin today’s interview.

Oliver:

Before we get into “The L Word,” tell us about the people and experiences behind The Bulletproof Souls. How did the band come together, and what originally brought you toward making music under this particular name and identity?

The Bulletproof Souls:

It started with a book. I wrote a crime novel called The Bulletproof Souls as J.W. Neville, and that name stayed with me. When I began making music, it felt like the right home for the songs too: stories about people who have loved, lost, made a mess of things and somehow kept going. I write the lyrics and shape the recordings through a studio-based process with two session singers that front the band, rather than this being a fixed group that formed in a rehearsal room. The music has become its own thing, but the instinct behind it began on the page.

Oliver:

You describe The Bulletproof Souls as a British rock band built around grit, melody and songs about people who do not always know how to say what they mean. How has that idea shaped the kind of stories you choose to tell through your music?

The Bulletproof Souls:

Writing fiction taught me to listen for the difference between what a character says and what they mean. That’s often where a song starts for me too. Someone wants to say “I love you” but changes the subject; someone says “I’m fine” and hopes the other person knows better. I like giving those people a voice without tidying them up.

Oliver:

There is a strong sense of anonymity and noir imagery around The Bulletproof Souls, along with the recurring figure of Clown Shoes Man. Where did this visual identity originate, and what does Clown Shoes Man represent within the wider story of the band?

The Bulletproof Souls:

I came to the music as a novelist, so thinking in characters and images felt natural. I also didn’t want my face to become the main image people associated with the songs. Clown Shoes Man, with his suit, fedora and ridiculous shoes, gives that visual world a recurring character. He can walk into a serious scene and make it funny without taking away the hurt underneath. That mix feels very close to the spirit of The Bulletproof Souls.

Oliver:

Since establishing The Bulletproof Souls, what have you learned about yourselves as musicians and storytellers, and has anything about the band’s direction changed as you have continued creating and releasing music?

The Bulletproof Souls:

The biggest lesson from writing books has carried over: trust the character. I’ve learned to let a song be the size its story needs. Some want a great racket at the end; others get stronger when the band holds back. The sound has grown broader, but I’m more particular now about the person at the centre of each song. If I can’t believe they would say those words, it isn’t finished.

Oliver:

With “The L Word: Love Is Hard” now out in the world, what would you like this EP to represent within the continuing story of The Bulletproof Souls, and where do you see the band taking its music and visual identity next?

The Bulletproof Souls:

The name began with a novel, and I love that it now holds songs and images as well. I’d like this EP to show that TBS can look closely at love without making it neat or sentimental. We’ll keep following the stories—sometimes into quiet, exposed places, sometimes into loud guitars and a chorus you can shout. The book and the music are different pieces of work, but they come from the same fascination with people and what it takes for them to carry on.

There is something compelling about the way The Bulletproof Souls allow their storytelling instincts to shape the music rather than treating the songs as isolated compositions. The L Word: Love Is Hard feels connected to a wider creative world where character, atmosphere and emotional restraint matter as much as the instrumentation. The contrast between gritty vocals, spacious arrangements and moments of greater intensity gives the project room to move without losing its identity. The interview also reveals how deliberately that identity has been built around the people and situations behind the songs.
