The single also represents an important moment in Strand’s continuing creative journey. After spending 16 years writing 100-page merger agreements before turning to 300-to-400-page novels, she discovered songwriting in 2018 after attending a songwriting camp hosted by Rodney Crowell. Her participation in the Singer/Songwriter Songwriting Challenge from 2020 helped her develop further alongside fellow Minnesota songwriters who became mentors, collaborators, and friends. Since releasing her debut album, “Golden Girl,” in 2023, she has continued shaping her garage-rock sound through influences ranging from The Muffs and The Cars to Joan Jett, The Pretenders, The Clash, The Dollyrots, and Minnesota’s The Replacements. With Mary Strand and the Garage, featuring Ryan Smith on guitar and vocals, Mark Wade on bass and vocals, and Peter Anderson on drums, she has found a musical setting for stories that demand to be heard. “Annunciation” stands as a deeply felt expression of that purpose, while also opening the way toward her planned fourth album in 2027.
