CHAOS THEORY!!! — THE BROKEN MUSIC (Interview)

CHAOS THEORY!!! – THE BROKEN MUSIC
CHAOS THEORY!!! – THE BROKEN MUSIC

Hello everyone, it’s your host Tehillah from DULAXI, and today I’m delighted to be joined by CHAOS THEORY!!!, the Glasgow, Scotland-based one-person music and production project behind the experimental album THE BROKEN MUSIC. Working across electronic, alternative rock, indie, lo-fi guitar music, new wave, synth indie rock, electronic pop, leftfield, synth pop and synthwave, CHAOS THEORY!!! has developed a distinctly self-directed approach to music that refuses to remain within a single genre or creative formula.

Released on 11 December 2025, THE BROKEN MUSIC is CHAOS THEORY!!!’s second album, comprising 16 tracks that move through different musical environments while exploring ideas surrounding music, contemporary society, human psychology, humour, darkness, technology and imperfection. Recorded at home and at an arts studio in Glasgow city centre during the winter of 2025, the album was created as an intentionally varied body of work in which no two tracks are expected to occupy exactly the same musical space.

Before we begin our conversation with CHAOS THEORY!!!, here’s what you need to know about today’s featured project.

About CHAOS THEORY!!!

CHAOS THEORY!!! approaches music as an open-ended creative world rather than a fixed genre exercise. Based in Glasgow, Scotland, the project is a one-person production and music-making operation, with CHAOS THEORY!!! handling the music while also working as a visual artist and operating the Hauntcore Industries label. That independent structure is central to the project’s identity, allowing ideas to move from conception to finished recording without the restrictions of a conventional creative hierarchy.

THE BROKEN MUSIC, the project’s second album, expands this approach into a 16-track exploration of music itself and the psychological atmosphere surrounding contemporary life. Rather than constructing an album around one consistent genre or repeating a successful formula, CHAOS THEORY!!! allows each track to develop its own character. Indie rock, synth pop, experimental music, electronic sounds, new wave influences, lo-fi guitar textures and other familiar musical forms are brought together in combinations that are intended to remain recognisable as songs while taking those familiar ingredients into less predictable territory.

The album was recorded during the winter of 2025, partly at home and partly at an arts studio in Glasgow city centre. The two environments offered different creative qualities, from the relaxed atmosphere of home recording to the freedom of working at the studio at night without concerns about disturbing others. That combination contributed to an album that retains an intentionally human and imperfect character.

There is also a significant idea behind the album’s title. THE BROKEN MUSIC was initially connected to the project’s lo-fi nature and the decision to retain mistakes and small imperfections rather than remove every irregularity. In an era increasingly shaped by AI-generated music and technology capable of producing highly polished representations of sound, CHAOS THEORY!!! embraces imperfection as part of the human experience. The album’s “broken” quality therefore operates on several levels, from its recording approach to its treatment of genre, contemporary culture and the human condition.

The record balances humour with darker observations. Its unusual track titles may initially suggest something playful or absurd, but beneath that surface is an awareness of wars, technological developments, AI-generated music and the wider psychological effects of living through an increasingly complicated world. Some songs use vocals and lyrics to communicate their ideas directly, while others remain instrumental, leaving the listener greater freedom to interpret the sounds and emotions for themselves.

With THE BROKEN MUSIC, CHAOS THEORY!!! is ultimately interested in making something that feels human, emotional and original while still embracing technology. The result is an album built around variety, imperfection and the freedom to follow an idea wherever it leads.

Having this brief introduction to today’s featured project, I’m sure both new listeners and longtime followers of CHAOS THEORY!!! are curious to hear directly from the person behind THE BROKEN MUSIC. So, without further ado, let’s begin today’s interview.

CHAOS THEORY!!! – THE BROKEN MUSIC

Tehillah:

CHAOS THEORY!!! is a one-person project that seems to operate without much interest in conventional artistic boundaries, with one person handling the music while also working as a visual artist and running Hauntcore Industries. What initially drew you toward building such a completely self-directed creative world, and what does having no one else between the original idea and the finished work allow you to do differently?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

it seemed to me it would be easier, quicker, and more rewarding creatively if I just put all my own ideas and work into it. Also, nobody else wanted to work with me! I think it makes it completely my own little sound world if I do it all, although I’m not against the idea of collaborating with people if we have something in common.

Tehillah:

THE BROKEN MUSIC is your second album, but you describe it less like a standard collection of songs and more like a “treatise on music in general” and on the psychological state of modern society. What were you trying to understand about music, people, or contemporary life when this album began taking shape?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

Well, it is partly just a collection of songs but the ideas in the songs are to do with my feelings about what’s interesting musically and my own take on what’s going on in the world. I wasn’t particularly trying to understand anything it was more just like I wanted to put my own ideas about things across, musically, lyrically, and in terms of the themes on the album.

Tehillah:

One of the most striking things about the album is your refusal to make all 16 tracks sound like variations of the same formula. Instead, each piece is intended to open a different window into a genre that can feel unfamiliar and familiar at the same time. How did you approach creating such radically different musical environments while still making the album feel like one coherent artistic statement?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

My approach is just to go with what’s inspiring to me and sounds and feels good or right to me. There’s not much intellectualising about it before or during the act of being creative, but afterwards I can start reading all sorts of mad things into it; I was also influenced by what was going on in the world or personally at the time. I find it hard to even write tracks that sound the same as each other, to be honest; they’re all coming from a new and distant place. I like to imagine it’s like visiting little different planets of sound and what I just happen to find there

Tehillah:

You describe the tracks almost like opening individual windows, with each one revealing a different genre or perspective, while the overall project moves through indie rock, synth pop, experimental music, electronic sounds, and other styles. Was there a particular genre or musical convention that you deliberately wanted to disrupt, and what did you discover once you began bending those familiar forms into something stranger?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

In my mind I was basically thinking about putting every style of music I have listened to into a blender and seeing what comes out, there wasn’t one particular style of music I was trying to mess with but you could just say popular music of the past 60 years I wanted to mess around with and make new and bizarre shapes out of it while still recognisably being a song or tune and not just a total sonic experiment

Tehillah:

Some songs on THE BROKEN MUSIC contain vocals and lyrics, while others deliberately leave interpretation to the listener. What determines whether a particular idea needs words, and when do you feel that removing the lyric and leaving the listener with the music creates a stronger or more honest form of communication?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

well sometimes its because I cant think of a good enough vocal or lyrical line so I just leave it as an instrumental, but overall I sometimes prefer just instrumental music and I do think its more honest in the way that music is a universal language unlike English so a listener in a different country who may or may not speak English could still get something out of it. As long as the track has some kind of feeling to it I think its valid

Tehillah:

The album was recorded partly at home and partly at an arts studio in Glasgow city centre during the winter of 2025. How did those two environments affect the character of the music, and were there aspects of the album that could only have emerged from working in the isolation of home rather than inside a shared creative space?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

The studio I worked in was a great thing because I recorded most of the music at night and didn’t have to put up with people complaining about noise, etc but recording at home also has a nice relaxed quality to it that you don’t get when you go somewhere to do it

Tehillah:

There is a deliberate tension between the album’s humour and its darker sense of danger. The playful presentation invites curiosity, but beneath it sits a much more serious reflection on where society is psychologically. How do you use humour in the music without allowing it to weaken the darker ideas underneath?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

Well, the “humour” itself is basically pretty bleak and dark, but it’s just a reminder not to take life or things too seriously despite the horror that goes on all around us

Tehillah:

The phrase THE BROKEN MUSIC could mean fractured genres, fractured listening habits, fractured culture, or even something broken inside the people making and consuming music. What does “broken” mean to you in the context of this album, and what did you want listeners to question when they encounter that title?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

All of the above, but originally it was because it’s a slightly lo fi recording that I was going to keep all the mistakes and little bits in because they now have AI music which is a “perfect” representation of music that could have no mistakes because its made by a machine so it was originally meant to be like imperfect music for imperfect people of which I am one!

Tehillah:

The release has been described as highly original precisely because it combines familiar elements in combinations that do not seem to have an obvious precedent. When you are making something this experimental, how do you decide whether an unusual idea is genuinely productive or simply unusual for its own sake?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

If it sounds good and right to me at the time, then it is right. I try not to overthink things too much; I use inspiration and what bog sends!

Tehillah:

Your role extends beyond composition and production into visual art, which creates an opportunity for the imagery surrounding CHAOS THEORY!!! to become part of the same artistic language as the music. How do you approach the relationship between what a listener hears and what they see, and how important is the visual side to understanding the world of THE BROKEN MUSIC?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

Musically, it’s not that important; it’s just that I enjoy making things and also do some visual art, but you could say it’s important in that it may give an insight into my tastes and objectives when making music if you can see something visual that the same person made

Tehillah:

The album contains 16 tracks, each intended to offer a different perspective rather than repeating one successful formula. Did that freedom make the album more creatively exciting, or did it create its own difficulties when it came to deciding which songs belonged together and where one musical world should give way to another?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

It made it more exciting, and it’s also the only way I can write. I think there’s a thread running through all my music, but from track to track they always end up sounding a little different from each other on a superficial level. It all makes sense to me is all I can say!

Tehillah:

You describe the record as a reflection on where society is psychologically, which suggests that the unusual structures and genre shifts are not only musical experiments but also part of the commentary. What aspects of modern life were most disturbing, fascinating, or absurd to you while creating this album?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

Well, there’s all these wars and horrible things going on, particularly at the time I was making this record, and all the stuff with AI and AI-generated music, etc. I’m not an expert on this stuff, but it does interest/effect me on a psychological level

Tehillah:

There is a particularly interesting distinction between making music that is difficult to categorize and making music that listeners can still emotionally connect with. With THE BROKEN MUSIC, how did you preserve memorable or human qualities inside such unconventional arrangements so that experimentation did not become emotional distance?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

The whole point is to make human and emotional music for me, but I’m also using technology, which is why I try and keep some little mistakes and imperfections in it so that it’s not got this boring sense of “perfection”

Tehillah:

As someone who describes CHAOS THEORY!!! as a one-man production and music-making operation, you also use a deliberately provocative and exaggerated personality around the project. How much of that persona is part of the artistic language of CHAOS THEORY!!!, and what does it allow you to say or explore that a more conventional presentation might restrict?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

I’m not really sure how to present things, and I don’t really put much thought into it. To be honest, I’m basically just focused on the music and creative aspects of stuff, so I don’t really know how to present it, which is probably why it’s wildly unpopular!

Tehillah:

Looking at THE BROKEN MUSIC beside your earlier work, what do you think this album reveals about your own development as a composer and producer, particularly in the way you now move between ideas, genres, humour, darkness, and experimentation without having to settle on one fixed identity?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

I’ve been the same the whole time I started making music. I really don’t think I’ve changed much, but I do think I’m technically better at getting my ideas across and, hopefully, better music and production-wise

Tehillah:

If someone finishes all 16 tracks and walks away remembering only one thing about THE BROKEN MUSIC, what would you want that thing to be, and what do you hope the album changes in the way they listen to music, interpret unfamiliar sounds, or think about the psychological world around them?

CHAOS THEORY!!!:

Hopefully they remember it is an entertaining and interesting listen that isn’t like every other record they’ve listened to recently. I hope they find something original in it, mainly that they maybe can’t get anywhere else!

THE BROKEN MUSIC is most interesting when its contrasting ideas are allowed to coexist without explanation. Across 16 tracks, CHAOS THEORY!!! treats genre as a starting point rather than a destination, moving between electronic textures, guitar-driven ideas, melodic passages and stranger instrumental experiments. The decision to retain imperfections gives the project a distinctly human quality, particularly against the album’s reflections on technology and AI. More than anything, the conversation reveals an artist committed to following instinct rather than formula, creating music according to what feels right in the moment.
