Released on 30th October 2026, “Johnny Still Got Game” captures John Korbel’s enduring passion for music and his willingness to explore new creative possibilities. The album represents a musical journey shaped by years of performance, songwriting, and personal experiences. Bringing together jazz influenced sophistication, singer songwriter expression, polished pop, and infectious funk and soul grooves, Korbel creates a collection that feels both refined and engaging. Influences from Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, Michael Franks, and Ben Sidran emerge through its sophisticated arrangements, harmonic richness, and relaxed rhythmic character. However, Korbel maintains his own identity through witty songwriting, expressive vocals, and an appreciation for musical detail.
One of the album’s greatest strengths is its musical diversity and the balance between thoughtful storytelling and enjoyable musical expression. Vibrant horn sections, expressive guitar work, layered instrumentation, and appealing rhythmic grooves give the compositions depth and character. Korbel’s jazz adjacent approach allows the music to move comfortably between sophisticated pop, soul, funk, and contemporary singer songwriter sounds without losing cohesion. His conversational vocal delivery complements the personal observations, humour, and reflections on relationships and life explored throughout the songwriting. Together, these elements create an album that is musically sophisticated while remaining warm and accessible.
Johnny Still Got Game Album Track Reviews:
Paint A Starry Night:
“Paint A Starry Night” opens “Johnny Still Got Game” with an expansive arrangement that establishes its jazz influenced pop identity. Built around a distinctive guitar riff, the composition develops into a colourful blend of melodic songwriting and sophisticated instrumentation. Saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and harmonica contribute complementary textures, giving the track its bright character and musical depth. The interplay between the horns and underlying melody creates an engaging atmosphere, while the production maintains a pleasing balance across the arrangement. Korbel’s relaxed, conversational vocal delivery brings warmth to the romantic subject matter, exploring love, memory, and the possibility of beginning again. Inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” and an observation associated with Joni Mitchell, the lyrics use artistic imagery to reflect on romance through the perspective of life experience. The result is a beautifully arranged and expressive introduction to the album.

Great Flowing River:
“Great Flowing River” introduces a contemplative dimension to “Johnny Still Got Game,” combining jazz influenced sophistication with thoughtful singer songwriter expression. Its arrangement features saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and harmonica, supported by melodic keyboard passages, rounded bass, and steady percussion. Together, these elements create a warm, expressive sound that complements the composition’s reflective character. The production maintains a pleasing balance, allowing the instrumentation to develop without overshadowing the melody. Korbel’s relaxed, conversational vocal delivery keeps the storytelling at the centre, communicating the song’s message with sincerity. Inspired by a road trip across the Mississippi River near Vicksburg, the composition explores American history, racial divisions, and reconciliation. Through the river metaphor, Korbel considers the importance of confronting the past and finding common ground. Its thoughtful imagery and meaningful songwriting make this a particularly memorable and emotionally engaging moment on the album.
Speed Shop At The Top Of The World:
“Speed Shop At The Top Of The World” takes “Johnny Still Got Game” into a playful musical direction, embracing funk influences and imaginative storytelling. Its lively arrangement combines engaging guitar work, colourful saxophone and woodwind passages, melodic keyboards, and a rhythmic foundation of bass and percussion. These elements create an infectious groove that gives the composition plenty of movement and personality. Korbel adopts a relaxed, expressive vocal delivery that complements the track’s unconventional lyrics and stream of consciousness approach. Inspired by a phrase that unexpectedly came to him one morning, the song develops into an imaginative world featuring grease monkeys, Buddhist monks, and automotive Bodhisattvas. Its unusual imagery and humorous wordplay celebrate curiosity and creative spontaneity, allowing the songwriting to move freely without following a conventional narrative. The result is an entertaining combination of funky instrumentation, musical sophistication, and lyrical eccentricity that reveals another dimension of Korbel’s artistry.
The Only Thing:
“The Only Thing” introduces a more intimate and understated atmosphere to “Johnny Still Got Game,” offering a contrast to the album’s expansive instrumental arrangements. Deliberately retained in a solo acoustic version, the composition places the guitar and vocals at the centre, allowing its melody and lyrical expression to develop naturally. The acoustic guitar provides a gentle musical foundation, while the restrained production preserves the closeness and authenticity of the performance. Korbel’s relaxed, conversational vocal delivery becomes the song’s primary expressive element, giving the songwriting a personal quality. Without elaborate instrumentation, the melodic phrasing and lyrical details receive greater attention, highlighting his ability to communicate through simplicity. The composition also reflects his songwriting approach, which often begins with lyrics before developing into music. “The Only Thing” brings a refreshing sense of intimacy to the album, showcasing another dimension of Korbel’s artistry through heartfelt acoustic expression and straightforward storytelling.
The production further highlights the collaborative spirit behind “Johnny Still Got Game.” Working with longtime producer Mark Falchuk, Korbel recorded his vocals, guitar, and mixes at his Orlando home studio, The Alcove, while musicians contributed remotely from Nashville, Orlando, and elsewhere. This approach demonstrates the creative possibilities of independent recording, bringing different musical perspectives together regardless of geographical distance. The resulting production maintains a cohesive sound while giving the arrangements room to develop naturally. Korbel’s openness to collaboration also reflects his willingness to embrace new methods and ideas as he continues developing his musical identity.
