INTERVIEW

Faithfulness: Growing up within Québec’s rich cultural and musical landscape, how did your early environment shape the artist you’ve become today?

Mélisande: I come from a musical family, my aunt and my uncle were in the famous Québec band Harmonium but I didn’t know that when I was young 😉 When I was very young my mother would put French music on and I would improvise songs like many kids. As a teen I was listening to prog rock, pop and other stuff and I was singing everyday coming back from school, it was my passion and I knew I wanted to do that as a career. I went to a guitar seminar with Robert Fripp in 2000 and after that I moved to Boston for 5 years so my experiences playing with a band there also shaped me as a musician.

Faithfulness: Since emerging in 2014, you’ve developed a distinct électrotrad identity. What first drew you toward blending traditional folk with electronic production?

Mélisande: I met my husband in 2007 and he was a trad musician so it became natural for us to merge our two different backgrounds, he wanted to mix those musical genres like some European bands and he thought it would be nice to have traditional songs sung by a « rock » singer 🙂 I was really enthusiastic about the idea!!!

Faithfulness: Your career includes over 400 live performances, which is remarkable. How have those stage experiences influenced the way you create and arrange music in the studio?

Mélisande: To have performed a lot helps me to decide the keys for the songs. Since the energy of the voice is really different in studio, very close to the mic and still really loud sometimes you go on stage and you would like to sing in a higher pitch with more energy !! It also helps me working the melodies and the interpretation, finding the right way for me to sing the songs. The electro part is produced by Gabriel Ethier who is a really awesome musician and my husband Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand composes all the instrumental trad driven melodies.

Faithfulness: Collaboration seems deeply rooted in your artistic journey. What has been the most defining lesson you’ve learned from working across cultures and genres over the years?

Mélisande: That we are all different but similar at the same time and that music unites us, everyone has a place under the followspot.

Faithfulness: You’re known for transforming concerts into communal experiences. What do you think audiences are truly connecting with in those moments of shared energy?

Mélisande: I think the happy vibe and my stage energy is what people are connecting to!!

Faithfulness: The title “Sur la même longueur d’onde” suggests unity and shared understanding. What does being “on the same wavelength” personally mean to you through this project?

Mélisande: It means that we are all according a big importance to our roots and believe in the importance of sharing our cultural heritage. We also share the French language in our music and we all believe that our differences unite us rather than divide us.

Faithfulness: This album blends electro, folk, and global influences in a very seamless way. How did you approach balancing tradition with modern production without losing the heart of either?

Mélisande: On this album it’s the first time we do original songs, in the past we used traditional songs that we modernized. I think it made it more important to include the traditional aspect of instrumental melodies in the arrangements in order to keep the balance with the electro since we don’t have the trad within the lyrics and vocal melodies.

Faithfulness: The project features a wide range of guest artists from different cultures and backgrounds. How did these collaborations shape the final identity of the album?

Mélisande: It made it a big colourful party !!

Faithfulness: Each featured artist brings a distinct voice and cultural texture. Was there a moment during recording where a collaboration completely shifted your vision for a track?

Mélisande: Yes, Mamselle Ruiz wrote lyrics that had a completely different angle than the lyrics I had so I rewrote the whole song to be more in phase with her energy and I am really happy with the result 🙂

Faithfulness: Your focus track “À l’abri du tempo” with Damien Robitaille carries both a playful and reflective energy. What story or feeling did you want listeners to step into with that song?

Mélisande: The song is urging people to be free and to step on the dance floor, to follow their dreams. In the lyrics we follow a character in a crowd, the person wants to let go but has trouble doing so and we are encouraging that person to get out of the mold and of the old habits.

Faithfulness: The track explores moving from hesitation into freedom on the dance floor. How do you translate that emotional transition into rhythm and sound?

Mélisande: In creating different sections, one that is groovy to describe the scene, one more melodic to encourage to go dance and then the chorus with a super high energy followed by the instrumental trad influenced melody that has an even higher energy.

Faithfulness: Across the album, there’s a strong sense of celebration and collective joy. How intentional was it for you to design music that encourages physical movement and communal experience?

Mélisande: It was totally intentional, I wanted to groove myself, to sing in a different manner than I do when it’s traditional lyrics. I also know that I prefer to rock the stage than to play ballads.

Faithfulness: With so many traditional instruments and electronic elements layered together, what was the most creatively challenging part of shaping the album’s sonic identity?

Mélisande: It was to create space for both genres and merge them well in order to have our electrotrad that has been our musical signature. Traditional music has a rhythm that makes it easy to mix with electronic beats but its important to make both genres shine together.

Faithfulness: Now that “Sur la même longueur d’onde” is out in the world, what feeling or message do you most hope listeners carry with them after experiencing it?

Mélisande: Life is beautiful, colourful and full of surprises, you must follow the flow and keep a smile on!

Faithfulness: Looking ahead, how do you envision expanding the “electro-traditional” space you’ve helped shape over the years?

Mélisande: I am working on merging the electrotrad with the acoustic trad formula to make the electrotrad more acoustically driven for show contexts like soft seaters and other trad events. I also want to push the envelop of the electro further for festivals and party performances.

HAVING LISTENED TO ‘Sur la même longueur d’onde’, HERE ARE MY HONEST THOUGHTS

On “Sur la même longueur d’onde,” Mélisande expands her electro traditional identity into a richly collaborative and rhythmically immersive body of work. The album thrives on connection, blending voices and cultural influences into a unified musical language where rhythm becomes the emotional center. Mid tempo grooves, layered percussion, and restrained harmonic structures create an atmosphere that feels fluid, hypnotic, and deeply communal. Rather than relying on dramatic progression, the compositions evolve through repetition, texture, and gradual sonic transformation, allowing subtle details to shape momentum. Mélisande’s vocal approach moves effortlessly between chant like phrasing, spoken cadences, and melodic restraint, functioning as both narrative and rhythmic force within the arrangements. The production carefully balances crisp electronic precision with warm acoustic textures, preserving intimacy while maintaining expansive sonic depth. “Sur la même longueur d’onde” ultimately stands as a vibrant celebration of cultural dialogue, collective energy, and emotional connection through sound.
